Halloween's here the kids are excited, Yippee! Well they don't actually say that, it’s more like 'cool more sweets’, and that's at two and four I think I'm in for a bumpy ride? Anyway what’s Halloween all about? is it another American thing. What does it mean to me.....? well it’s just another money making scheme by the shops and a chance for teenage chavs to come round in their base ball caps and tracksuits with a bin bag cape and a tinnie asking for sweets. Did I have to take my words back not one baseball cap, teenager or plastic bin bag in sight? What we actually got was polite, young children making an excellent effort at dressing up! My faith has returned, Praise the Lord.
Here are some pictures to celebrate. All again with the Canon F1.8 on my Canon 5D MKII and 450D bodies
Roll on bonfire night, I’ve decided to make a Guy and it’s British
This is my photography blog - just something to talk about, get some feedback on some of my work and display my photos.

Niffty Fiffty Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 II
Brought a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II the other day a cheap and tacky looking thing cheap as chips..... but with a little secret it takes some great pictures, have a look, all of these pictures were taken with my Canon 5D MKII no flash only low ambient lighting, ISO 800 f 1.8 and spot metering. only edited with some cropping and white balance adjustment, great background blur, a great winter church wedding lens. can't wait to try it with a lower ISO and more light.

The scores are in
The BoTPS internal competition was held last night, I had entered 3 prints in the beginners section and 3 projected images in the intermediate section (there is no beginners section), all the pictures were scored out of 20 so I didn't do too badly had one dire 12, four 14s and one 16. I came joint third in the prints section, but nowhere in the projected. What I found interesting was someone's critical opinion which I found refreshing, someone actually saying what was wrong with my pictures and I picked up some useful insights and tips. I think this will be an excellent way to improve my photographs.

The Matix but no Déjà vu
I've had the feeling for some time now, the feeling that I waiting for something, the feeling that something important is about to happen. I watched the Matix the other day, isn't that a line from the film? It's been niggling at the back of my head stopping my normal thought process (what thought process I hear you say), maybe I'm ready for a change, not happy in my work, wanting pastures new. fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't jump ships without another one a done deal. I definately want to do more photography as a profession, maybe I should be putting my services out to tender?

Pencils
Set up my light box and a Sigma EX 50mm f2.8 DG macro with my Canon 5D MKII yesterday to take a close up of coloured pencils then printed off to check my printer setting, using the 'managed by printer' settings the colours were way out, finally finished with Photoshop using it's printer management set to Adobe 98 had the most acurate results compared to the monitor.

Mounting 5-10-09
It's not what you think...?
I borrowed a mount cutter this weekend to cut some mounts boards for my BoTPS competition photos, after sorting out the kids eating, playing, bathing, cleaning up after and finally putting to bed, shopping, and a slight bit of socialising I only actually managed Friday night. Time aside I think I've managed a pretty good first attempt, didn't have to scrap any work so in my book that's good.
This Thursday is the dead line for the entries, I'm not sure how many you can entire so I added quite a few into the projected image section, but only 3 into the printed.
Nearly forgot I've had my prints come back from DS Colour Labs with very pleasing results, 8 10" x 8"pictures @ 45p each, good value I think. The quality is very good, I had Gloss and Lustre and I much prefer the gloss, both had very good colour rendition. and a quick turn around. the only problem I had was that as I use HSBC bank the debit cards have 2 extra digits and the online system won't allow payment, you do actually complete the transaction but then get an email to contact them to pay for your pictures.

Huey Screen Calibrator 1-10-09
I've had varying degrees of success with printing at home, so to try and remedy this I've just purchased a Huey screen calibrator from my local photography store that round the corner from my work, just tried it with my work monitor with a noticeable change in colours and light levels, I will now try it on my laptop at home, print something and see if it is consistent with the monitor, I will keep you posted.
