Christmas in Liverpool

It's that time of year again, yes it's Christmas, a time for no time to do anything, everyone rushing around trying to get things done, food to be brought, and cooked, presents to be wrapped and hidden from children. office parties, office politics, Home polities, family arguments over how much to spend on whom, etc, etc,  So in the midst of this I decided along with a couple of other like minded souls decided to take a trip to Liverpool!..... to take some pictures, yes you heard right, in the middle of the busiest season of the shopping year a trip to Liverpool, the day went well sub-zero temperatures, snow blizzards on the motorway, car washers icing up, extortionate parking and to top it all off camera's freezing up, lenses misting up and authorities with a anti-tripod policies.

Did the trip go well? who knows? have a look at a few I had the time to edit. Merry Christmas everyone roll on next Crimbo.

The Wedding

All's well with the wedding in Ashbourne despite no light, no place to take photos and three different artificial light sources to correct, tungsten, fluorescent, halogen with a smidgen of natural twilight creeping in for good measure, the happy couple are well....? 'happy', Rebecca and me are recuperating (well I am), DVDs and CDs delivered in record time and an order in for a Coffee Table Book.  Here are a few of pics to look at:

St Oswald's Church at Ashbourne

Sorry all, not much to report this week, I have been surveying the scene at Ashbourne where my next wedding is set, a beautiful church with plenty of photographic opportunities (see bellow)  It will be all flash and artificial light as the wedding is at 4pm so my favourite lens the Canon EF f1.8 will be in full use, minimal flash to get the warm ambience showing through. All of the photos bellow were taken without flash using my Canon 5D MKII and the Canon 24-105mm EF f4.0L lens.

iMac time

Decided to buy a new iMac, I have been taking advice on all corners, pros and cons of Macs and PCs (windows) ease of use , familiarity, processing power, screen resolution etc etc. It all boiled down to processing power and screen properties and I was swayed by the iMac, I think there will always be two camps on this matter. Anyway few can deny Apple has the market on style and usability, wow what a difference straight away no setting up no connecting up no loading just turn on and away you go, and what a screen!

Halloween?

Halloween's here the kids are excited, Yippee! Well they don't actually say that, it’s more like 'cool more sweets’, and that's at two and four I think I'm in for a bumpy ride? Anyway what’s Halloween all about? is it another American thing. What does it mean to me.....? well it’s just another money making scheme by the shops and a chance for teenage chavs to come round in their base ball caps and tracksuits with a bin bag cape and a tinnie asking for sweets. Did I have to take my words back not one baseball cap, teenager or plastic bin bag in sight? What we actually got was polite, young children making an excellent effort at dressing up! My faith has returned, Praise the Lord.

Here are some pictures to celebrate. All again with the Canon F1.8 on my Canon 5D MKII and 450D bodies

Roll on bonfire night, I’ve decided to make a Guy and it’s British

Niffty Fiffty Canon EF 50mm f 1.8 II

Brought a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II the other day a cheap and tacky looking thing cheap as chips..... but with a little secret it takes some great pictures, have a look, all of these pictures were taken with my Canon 5D MKII no flash only low ambient lighting, ISO 800 f 1.8 and spot metering. only edited with some cropping and white balance adjustment, great background blur, a great winter church wedding lens. can't wait to try it with a lower ISO and more light.

The scores are in

The BoTPS internal competition was held last night, I had entered 3 prints in the beginners section and 3 projected images in the intermediate section (there is no beginners section), all the pictures were scored out of 20 so I didn't do too badly had one dire 12, four 14s and one 16. I came joint third in the prints section, but nowhere in the projected. What I found interesting was someone's critical opinion which I found refreshing, someone actually saying what was wrong with my pictures and I picked up some useful insights and tips. I think this will be an excellent way to improve my photographs.

The Matix but no Déjà vu

I've had the feeling for some time now, the feeling that I waiting for something, the feeling that something important is about to happen. I watched the Matix the other day, isn't that a line from the film? It's been niggling at the back of my head stopping my normal thought process (what thought process I hear you say), maybe I'm ready for a change, not happy in my work, wanting pastures new. fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't jump ships without another one a done deal. I definately want to do more photography as a profession, maybe I should be putting my services out to tender?

Multiplicity

Got the idea from Miss Aniela, Paula was asking for an extra pair of hands in the kitchen so I helped I gave her two extra pairs of hands, here's the proof, and while I was at it I wanted more time for me, so I did that too!

Cracked it

I think I've cracked it, if you want a decent online blog profile the answer is..... put more blogs on, the more you blogs the more online posts there are! Hopefully!

searches

I've been web browsing this weekend looking for interesting photography sites, have a look at my links especially Miss Aniela and jeff Newsom.

Tried googling me without much success, how do you get your online presence high?  how do peaple seach blogs? why can't I even google jameswooding.blogspot.com?  If anyone knows let me know that is if anyone can find me?

Pencils

Set up my light box and a Sigma EX 50mm f2.8 DG macro with my Canon 5D MKII yesterday to take a close up of coloured pencils then printed off to check my printer setting, using the 'managed by printer' settings the colours were way out, finally finished with Photoshop using it's printer management set to Adobe 98 had the most acurate results compared to the monitor.

Mounting 5-10-09

It's not what you think...?

I borrowed a mount cutter this weekend to cut some mounts boards for my BoTPS competition photos, after sorting out the kids eating, playing, bathing, cleaning up after and finally putting to bed, shopping, and a slight bit of socialising I only actually managed Friday night. Time aside I think I've managed a pretty good first attempt, didn't have to scrap any work so in my book that's good.

This Thursday is the dead line for the entries, I'm not sure how many you can entire so I added quite a few into the projected image section, but only 3 into the printed.

Nearly forgot I've had my prints come back from DS Colour Labs with very pleasing results, 8 10" x 8"pictures @ 45p each, good value I think. The quality is very good, I had Gloss and Lustre and I much prefer the gloss, both had very good colour rendition. and a quick turn around. the only problem I had was that as I use HSBC bank the debit cards have 2 extra digits and the online system won't allow payment, you do actually complete the transaction but then get an email to contact them to pay for your pictures.

Huey Screen Calibrator 1-10-09

I've had varying degrees of success with printing at home, so to try and remedy this I've just purchased a Huey screen calibrator from my local photography store that round the corner from my work, just tried it with my work monitor with a noticeable change in colours and light levels, I will now try it on my laptop at home, print something and see if it is consistent with the monitor, I will keep you posted.

Online printers 30-9-09

I've been trying some online printer recently, the ones I've tried are Loxley Colour for my coffee table books, and prints from Photobox with good result, lastly I've just ordered some 10" x 8" from DS Colour labs I'll let you know how they turn out
